Lab Weeks Celebrate Laboratory Professionals Impact on Patient Care Around the World

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Apr. 10, 2023–The College of American Pathologists (CAP) celebrates laboratory professionals for their dedication to providing high quality patient care. Laboratory professionals are the focus of global recognition during specified weeks throughout April—also known as “Lab Week”.

Pathologists and laboratory professionals play a critical role in research and advancing medicine,” explains CAP President Emily E. Volk, MD, FCAP. “Laboratory professionals have a special responsibility in the care of their patients. They also have a responsibility to ensure policymakers and hospital leadership understand that their work is no less important, and that they are integral members on a patient’s health care team,” she added.

The CAP urges the public to recognize the impact laboratory professionals make in the lives of patients and celebrate their contributions throughout this month during these weeks:

           April 9–15

           April 23–29

           April 23–29

“As a medical laboratory professional, you have a special responsibility in the care of patients,” adds Dr. Volk, who is also vice president of pathology and clinical laboratories at the University of Louisville Health system. “While you may not provide care at the bedside of patients, you provide accurate and timely diagnosis through reliable laboratory tests to determine their needed treatment. We have a special responsibility in the care of our patients. We also have a responsibility to ensure policymakers and hospital leadership understand that our work is no less important, and that we are integral members on a patient’s health care team.”

For more than 75 years, the CAP has continued to advocate for, and foster excellence in, the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide.
